| The Alte Schmiede is a cultural events space located in a 15th Century house in the 1st District. Its name stems from the fact that a blacksmith’s workshop was founded in the building in 1880, which can still be visited today. Since 1975, this space has been used for literature readings, concerts and exhibitions. The Alte Schmiede Association also runs the Literature Quarter, the Music Workshop, the Arthothek Gallery, and publishes a monthly journal called “Der Hammer” (the Hammer). Since its inception, over 3000 events have taken place at Alte Schmiede, and the Literature Quarter has become a renowned platform of intellectual exchange for Austrian authors. Two annual events take place at the space, namely Literature in March and Literature in Autumn. |
