The Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) is an internationally renowned museum of arts and crafts and the applied arts. It is located on the Ringstrasse, near Stadtpark and the Landstrasse Station. It was built in the 19th Century, and was the first museum building to be constructed on the Ring.
The MAK’s focus lies on the traditional Applied Arts, and it has a comprehensive collection of arts and crafts from time periods starting with the middle ages and ending with contemporary pieces. In recent years, the MAK has added a collection of contemporary art and architecture. While the traditional collection is arranged in chronological order, the “Study Collection” is arranged according to the materials the pieces are made out of. For instance, there is a Glass Collection, a Metal Collection and a Ceramics Collection, amongst others.
An additional highlight of the MAK is the Restaurant “Österreicher im MAK,” whose star chef, Helmut Österreicher creates a mix of haute cuisine and traditional Austrian specialties at affordable prices. Careful attention was paid to the design of the restaurant, to give diners and modern, atmospheric dining experience. |
