Driver’s Licenses issued within the European Economic Area (the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) are accepted in Austria and valid for an unlimited period. The validity period of driver’s licenses issued outside the EEA is six months from the point where permanent residence is established. During this time, licenses must be converted (EEA licenses can be converted on a voluntary basis). In Vienna, the responsible authority is the Motor Vehicle Department (Verkehrsamt). In cities with Federal Police Departments, it is the Federal Police Headquarters (Bundespolizeidirektion). In smaller cities with no federal police, the district administration (Bezirkshauptmannschaft) or the Municipal Authority (Magistrat) is responsible for license conversion.
In order to have your license converted, you will need to present the following documents:
In Vienna the original documents are required plus copies (one copy from the Residence Registration Form, two copies from the Old driving licence and Passport). |
