The Museum of Fine Arts was opened in 1889 in conjunction with the Museum of Natural History. The buildings are mirror images, and stand opposite each other on a square between the Ringstrasse and Museumsquartier. The Museum of Fine Arts is one of the most important fine arts museums in the world. The museum has 10 permanent collections, and many of the pieces were part of Hapsburg private arts collections until they were donated to the museum.
The Portrait Gallery is probably the most renowned and most visited section of the Museum of Fine Arts, which contains a comprehensive collection of 15th and 16th Century Flemish masters, including masterpieces by Pieter Breugel the elder. There are also paintings and drawings by Rubens, Dürer and Velazquest, as well as numerous works by Italian masters such as Tizian, Raffael and Giorgione.
The Egyptian-Oriental Collection is also worth a visit, as it is one of the richest and most comprehensive of its kind in Europe.
