The Central Cemetry was opened in 1874 and commissioned by Franz Joseph I. This is the largest cemetery in Vienna, and contains the graves of many famous and honored people ranging from politicians to artists and scientists. The grave of the recently deceased Austrian President Thomas Klestil is also here and the funeral took place in the Dr. Karl Lueger Memorial Church. This funeral church is one of the significant Jugendstil structures in Vienna, built in 1910.
The park and the creative graveyard designs make the Central Cemetery worth a visit. |
