| This synagogue, the so-called “City Temple,” was built in 1824-1826, and is the only one that survived the destruction of Jewish synagogues in 1938. After long renovations, the City Temple was reopened in the 1960’s and remains a place of worship for Vienna’s small but vibrant Jewish community. Before 1938, there were about eight other synagogues in the city of Vienna, the first one being built during the middle ages on what is today Judenplatz. (See also Jewish Museum of Vienna) |
